Stilltown x TROY presents 4-1-2 Throwbacks (1992-2004)

The process of digging up and sharing more than two decades worth of Pittsburgh hip-hop material is fun, but also quite time consuming. In the process of finding these treasures, I'm doing a lot of fact-checking and researching of the story behind each artist and release.

There is plenty of dope Pittsburgh music that will soon invade the blogosphere. With the explosion of Wiz Khalifa on the mainstream music scene, Mac Miller on the brink, Jasiri X carrying conscious hip-hop on his back, Shade Cobain creating the future sound of the genre, and other local acts like Ayatollah Jaxx, Kid A, and Varsity Squad on the come-up, there is no better time than now to introduce the many hip-hop artists that have worn the city's name on their chest in years and decades passed. DJ Essence - Terminal Illness (2002)

Dope freestyle mix album put together by DJ Essence in 2002, released on Sick & Tired Records. This album features mostly Pittsburgh artists, but also some national hip-hop acts including Prevail, Oldominion, and Virtuoso. J. Sands, Strict Flow, and Dos Noun are relatively well known in hip-hop circles, while others such as Black Sun and Ron Noodles have been recognized as some of the illest lyricists locally.

Black Sun - Donut Holes (2006)

Black Sun stole the show at Rhyme Calisthenics 9.

Judges called out artist after artist for generic rhymes. In that sense, Sun was a breathe of fresh air. His humility reigned supreme.

We'll dig into the happenings of Rhyme Cal 9 soon, an interview with co-founder J. Armstead Brown coming very soon.

This post is about the dope MC that is Black Sun.

Aside from a few sporadic features and tracks, I have only one album from Sun. Rapping to J. Dilla's classic Donuts, the album is appropriately titled Donut Holes. I got the album from Sun's Myspace back in '06, and vaguely remember Sun telling a story of a neighbor complimenting the album after hearing it pump from Sun's house while waiting at the bus stop in the morning!

Watching things transpire at last night's event, I couldn't help but think about how much a release from an experienced, talented, and professional MC such as Black Sun could help this new generation of artists. That is, if they're willing to listen.
